Writing Courses
Students interested in pursuing coursework in writing programs will find that it is an opportunity to sharpen their current skills, while also broadening their horizons. Educational coursework for writing students is often designed to push the student's comfort boundaries and expose them to writing styles, genres and literary voices that they may not be familiar with. Writing courses are a way for students to focus on their craft and learn where their strengths and interests lie. (cont.)
Students have the opportunity to experiment when it comes to writing style, voice and subject matter. Students considering this subject probably realize that writers are innately curious people. Literature's best writers were astute observers who were fascinated with what made their fellow humans tick. Some writers draw their inspiration from an active imagination that brings their fictional characters to life. Other writers revel in factual detail and researching a subject that grabs their attention. Students can choose from courses that focus on as many different types of writing as there are subjects to write about -- fiction, non-fiction, poetry, screenplays, memoirs and novels are just a few examples. As with any life skill, writing is a talent that generally improves the more you do it! Pursuing a degree in writing helps a student discover their strengths, their interests and may even provide the inspiration need to get that first draft completed.
