Professionals with degrees in accounting and finance are in greater demand than ever, as companies of all sizes face greater oversight by government agencies, stockholders, lenders and suppliers. The competitive pressures and new opportunities in the global economy require expertise in traditional accounting and finance best practices, as well as the knowledge and foresight to help companies adapt to change and seize opportunities.
An accounting-focused curriculum typically includes topics such as budget management, tax law and auditing, and regulatory compliance requirement such as those imposed by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. Those who focus on finance will study topics such as budget planning, raising and managing capital, risk management, corporate finance and financial accounting.
Hiring by both accounting and financial firms as well as by company accounting and finance departments is forecast to expand through 2012, creating opportunities for those with accounting and finance degrees from the associate through the graduate levels. Current professionals can also find courses to prepare them for advanced certification, such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), and Certified Management Accountant (CMA).
