The University of the Cumberlands Alternative Certification in Special Education (LBD) with Certification P-12 is designed to accept graduate candidates who have a bachelor's degree with little or no teacher preparation coursework or a teaching degree with no certification in special education. The curriculum for this degree will include a special education curriculum with a strong classroom management and discipline component along with teaching methods. The program utilizes a blended approach with on-line learning, directed study, distance learning seminars, and a mentorship support. Mentors will serve as role models and provide a 'safety net' for the students. A field component affords practical application to classroom settings and the standards application.
