Degree Description: The University of the Cumberlands Reading and Writing Specialist Certification program is designed for individuals who have a master's degree in education and have graduated from an institution of higher learning. Students may earn the Rank I certification at the “sixth-year,” specialist, or doctoral level, which requires 30 hours. Students may also earn non-degree certification at the master’s level, which requires 18 hours. The requirements for Reading and Writing certification at the Rank I level include reading & writing foundations, diagnosis of reading & writing problems, diagnostic procedures in teaching reading & writing practicum, strategies for reading & writing program and practicum, pluse six additional hours of reading and writing or English electives. Candidates earning the non-degree certification are required to take eighteen hours from a selection of the aforementioned courses.
