| Program Description: | UMUC's Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management focuses on disaster prevention, planning, preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery. The curriculum covers needs and issues, operations management, planning and response, and terrorism and is designed to provide students with a global outlook, interpersonal skills, and emergency management knowledge and skills. Students are prepared for leadership positions in emergency management in government and industry or for graduate study in emergency management, homeland security, or management and leadership. Coursework may also fill requirements related to National Fire Protection Association Standard on Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs, Certified Emergency Manager, and other professional association certifications. Students who graduate with a major in Emergency Management will be able to: analyze the response of government and industry to disasters and other significant events in history in order to develop emergency management principles and policies; describe current emergency management policies, operational theories, and functions, in relation to significant and potential disasters; explain the ethical, political, social, environmental, and economic issues related to emergency management planning and operations; demonstrate the critical thinking and program management skills necessary to provide leadership and support in emergency situations; identify the technological tools used for the effective administration of an emergency management program; and explain the importance of leadership and performance in emergency management and identify the leadership traits of competent emergency management personnel. This degree requires 120 credits of coursework to complete. |
