Medical Insurance Billing and Coding (Certificate)

The Medical Insurance Billing and Coding certificate program provides students with a solid foundation in the critical skills needed in healthcare billing and coding practices. Successful graduates will be well-prepared to enter the healthcare field in billing and coding - both physician-based and in-patient coders. Graduates will be prepared to take the AAPC for Apprentice-level certification (CPC-A).

Upon completion of this program, you should be able to:

• Demonstrate keyboarding, word processing and computer skills
• Apply medical office organizational techniques
• Understand and perform insurance billing and coding using ICD-9, HCPCS and CPT for physician and health offices
• Function effectively in a medical setting
• Understand the ethics and HIPAA requirements and obligations in medical billing and coding
• Coordinate a successful job search
• Apply this certification toward the CPC requirements
• Communicate both verbally and in writing in a concise and clear manner
• Recognize and apply management and human relations skills and techniques

As a graduate from this program, you may apply for a variety of employment opportunities. Options are available in medical facilities, including hospitals, clinics, medical offices, health departments, health research firms, insurance companies and laboratories, Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), and medical billing and collection agencies.
