The Secondary Education concentration seeks to:

  • Provide additional breadth and depth beyond the undergraduate training.
  • Develop the knowledge base and teaching competencies required for teacher licensure.
  • Enhance professional preparation in the skills and methods of teaching content at elementary and secondary levels.
  • Provide a deeper understanding of child and adolescent development.
  • Foster learning experiences which encourage leadership in fostering creativity, investigation, testing of new ideas, and research.

Candidates seeking licensure as secondary teachers should have completed a bachelor's degree with a major in the intended endorsement area or a degree in a related field with courses similar to that required for a bachelor's degree in the field of study. Any deficiencies in course requirements must be addressed prior to student teaching. In addition, candidates must successfully complete the appropriate Praxis II content exam in the area of endorsement prior to student teaching.

Coursework for the program is offered in multiple delivery formats with both on-campus and off-campus options. Program completion requires a minimum of 9 hours in the residential formats.

*Minimal on-campus intensives may be required for online program.
