A Master of Public Health is an esteemed degree, valuable in a variety of health-care occupations. It is a requirement in many public-health positions and preferred for others. Perhaps most important, those who hold the degree can anticipate continued growth in career opportunities over the next decade due to new roles in the emerging health-care system. The field of public health is charged with the maintenance and promotion of high-quality health standards in the community. Included are federal, state, and local health and environmental organizations. The public health practice comprises, but is not limited to, health care and research including biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health policy and planning, mental health, and population studies. Identifying needs and administering programs to meet those needs is the province of the public health administrator. Applicants need a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a grade point average of 2.0 or better.
