Objectives of the Juris Doctor Program:

  • Demonstrate the ability to distinguish and summarize the legal principles involved in traditional fields of law study;
  • Develop an integrated understanding of the various areas of law;
  • Apply the law to factual situations and prepare credible arguments on either side of an issue;
  • Analyze a given fact pattern according to established legal principles and consider alternative solutions;
  • Appraise and evaluate real-life situations in light of a body of law, applying the law to the facts;
  • Develop the personal ethical standards and the professionalism required for success as an attorney; and
  • Prepare learners who desire to sit for the California Bar Examination and to practice law in the State of California to succeed in reaching those goals.

Admission Requirements:

  • Bachelor Degree: All applicants to the J.D. program must have an earned Bachelor degree from an appropriately accredited postsecondary institution approved by the California Committee of Bar Examiners.
  • Personal Statement: All applicants to the J.D. program must submit a Personal Statement discussing the ways in which your background, education, and professional experiences prepare you for the study of law and the ways in which your personal qualities will contribute to your success as a distance learner. The Admissions Committee will use your Personal Statement to assess your writing ability, your readiness to pursue a law degree, and your potential for success as a student at Southern California University for Professional Studies School of Law. The Personal Statement is an important evaluative component of the admission process. Personal Statements should be one to two pages in length and double spaced. Applications will not be considered complete until the Personal Statement has been submitted.

The Law School may accept a maximum of 64 law school semester units in transfer from another law school. Official transcripts must be received from previous law schools. For students studying for the California Bar, their transfer is also subject to the requirements of the California Committee of Bar Examiners. The applicant must request from the Committee of Bar Examiners an evaluation of law study completed and contemplated and must submit the results to the Registrar's Office within the first two semesters at SCUps.
