If you enjoy traveling and helping create memories that will last a lifetime for others, a career as a travel agent may be right for you.
Travel agents must be able to leverage technology to get up-to-the-minute information on ever-changing travel plans—and coordinate logistics including security precautions. You will need to go beyond booking flights and create itineraries if need be, so you will be required to know the ins and outs of destinations. Travel agents use computers to book flights, make hotel room reservations and set up activities for during the trip. (cont.)
A working knowledge of basic computer programs is essential, as is the willingness to learn new applications because computer and software platforms can change depending on the agency you work for. This career offers a lot of flexibility because you can work as an independent travel agent, or with an established agency. You can also create your own travel agency and essentially run your own business. When you are a travel agent, you will also need to differentiate yourself from the crowd. People can book trips easily online by themselves, so you’ll need to sell the benefits of using an agency whether you are self-employed or not.
