Criminal Justice Courses

Criminal Justice ProfessionalA criminal justice degree can open up a wide array of job opportunities in a challenging but rewarding career field. A strong background in physical fitness is necessary, and knowing a language is a huge plus. Many individuals with military backgrounds also consider this field.

Not all police force positions require a four-year degree, though many entry-level applicants for police jobs have completed some formal postsecondary education. Police officers usually complete a program at a police academy, approximately 12 to 14 weeks. (cont.)

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, growth in this area is expected to be average. Police officers have the option of moving up through the ranks, which offers additional pay. A four-year degree in criminal justice or law enforcement opens up possibilities for federal jobs, which do mandate a four-year degree.

In addition to police work, probation officers, corrections officers and private detectives are also attractive careers for graduates with a degree in criminal justice.
