When FIU first opened for classes in 1972, we had 5,667 students — the largest opening day enrollment in U.S. collegiate history. Our growth continues in many areas. FIU has become one of the 25 largest universities in the nation, based on enrollment. We now have more than 44,000 students, over 14,000 online students, 1,000+ full time faculty, and 134,000 alumni. With a total of more than 2,800 full-time employees, FIU is one of the largest employers in Miami-Dade County. We also confer about one half of all degrees awarded by universities in Miami-Dade County.

Approximately 77 percent of students at FIU are undergraduates with the majority enrolled in the Colleges of Business Administration, Arts & Sciences and Engineering.
