University expands online degree offerings to include information technology

As modern technology is increasingly integrated into the modern workplace, professionals with training in information technology (IT) are in high demand. Employment of these individuals is projected to grow 17 percent over the next eight years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.

In order to meet the demand for professionals with IT experience, many American colleges and universities are expanding their online technology-related degree programs. Web-based courses assist working adults who wish to advance in their current position or switch careers. For example, Quinnipiac University in Connecticut recently announced that it will offer its master's degree in IT in an online format starting in the 2011-2012 academic year, Hartford Business reports.

The Connecticut State Board of Governors of Higher Education approved the new web-based format, as well as a change from the programs former title, master's degree in computer information systems. The program is designed for IT professionals who wish to earn an advanced degree, while continuing in their current jobs.

Quinnipiac currently offers nine online degree programs, including MBAs in supply chain management, chartered financial analyst and healthcare management, as well as master's degrees in organizational leadership, occupational therapy and teacher leadership, as well as interactive communications.

Today, nearly 4 million students are taking online courses and earning online college degrees, Reuters reports.
