According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment of computer scientists is expected to increase by 24 percent over the next eight years. These professionals often design new technologies or find alternatives to existing resources. Individuals in this field who hold advanced degrees or certifications may have the best job prospects.

At Hamilton University, Bernadine Dias was the first woman in her class to major in computer science more than 27 years ago. Today, Dias is research faculty member in robotics at Carnegie Melon University (CMU).

Since taking her educator position, Dias has created TechBridgeWorld, which explores how computing technology can be applied to address needs that are the most important to global communities.

TechBridgeWorld's research efforts are managed by students at CMU. Graduates and undergraduates at the university who are involved in the program come from departments such as business, engineering, information systems and public policy.

The initiative offers courses, a summer internship program, seminars and other opportunities for students to learn about the growing field of information and communication technologies.

TechBridgeWorld has created computing technologies in literacy, social work, education and health.
