New program to foster IT growth in Michigan

IT industry grows in Michigan
In an effort to create new information technology jobs in Michigan, several agencies from that state will join forces in support of a new multifaceted program aimed at attracting companies and providing training.
The New Economic Partnerships program will continue work that was already being done by the Michigan Department of Technology. The program represents a formal commitment to job creation and retention and includes the participation of two other agencies.
Among the new program's undertakings will be offering IT companies economic incentives to set up shop within the state and providing training on the latest methods and technologies to their employees.
The primary purpose of the incentives is to attract companies, but retention efforts will focus on training, which will be provided in cooperation with local colleges.
"Our four-year and community colleges are key partners in this endeavor," said Stanley "Skip" Pruss, director of the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth, quoted by Great Lakes IT Report. "We are developing cross-training programs for our displaced workers and providing opportunities for individuals entering the workforce for development into these high-growth industries."
Keeping pace with technology is an excellent way for regional markets to stay competitive in the job market, but it may work on an individual scale. Talking to counselors about enrolling in IT education programs could be a good way to begin the process.
