AT&T customers in New Jersey and New York state may soon see increases in speed and reception on their smart mobile devices after the telecommunications company announced it will add additional spectrum to its wireless data networks in those areas.

The move is partially a response to customer dissatisfaction with the speed and accessibility of the data network as it exists today. A similar deployment in San Francisco that increased speed and reliability was considered a success by AT&T officials, and they were eager to repeat it in other well-populated areas.

"Where we deployed additional 850 MHz spectrum, we saw an immediate increase in wireless data activity across the AT&T 3G network in those areas," said vice president at AT&T Tom DeVito.

AT&T is eager to quell rumblings that suggest its data network is inferior to that of its competitors. Network strength has increasingly become the focus of mobile phone carrier advertisements, and as the popularity of mobile devices with data applications continues to rise, the importance of such perceptions may become increasingly critical.

Likewise, network strength may rely on diligent maintenance of company-owned networks and cell towers. Engineers and technicians who will build and maintain this kind of technology are likely to find excellent opportunities driven by these circumstances, which makes this a great time to enter the field or embark upon a related course of study.
