Many adult learners wish to earn a degree from a recognized university, but are inhibited by the cost of higher education or scheduling demands. However, most American colleges are launching distance learning programs to cater to the needs of nontraditional learners.

For example, the University of Massachusetts (UMass) recently announced that they will be offering a masters degree in public policy through their online campus, UMassOnline. The course offering was developed by UMass Dartmouth's School of Education, Public Policy and Civic Engagement and has been added to a growing number of online programs.

UMassOnline caters to the five campuses within the UMass system, and provides information technology support and other services.

The new program was developed and will be taught by the same faculty who teach on campus.

"A need clearly exists to educate the next generation of public policy experts while at the same time giving the current generation of professionals the opportunity for advancing their knowledge, career possibilities and options through this advanced degree," said Michael D. Goodman, associate professor and department chair.

The program was designed to cater to working adults who are interested in professional development or a career change, as well as recent college graduates who want to continue their education at the graduate level.

Public policy degree holders may work in municipal, state or federal government, non-profit organizations or trade and labor associations, according to officials from UMass.
