In an effort to provide their student population with added flexibility, authorities with Shorter College have announced that the school will offer more than one dozen online courses during the summer semester of 2010.

Sean Butcher, director of the college's online programs, told the Rome News-Tribune that Shorter will augment its distance learning curriculum by adding courses in business computer applications, American government, religious studies, college algebra and theater appreciation. He also mentioned that the summer classes will be available to current Shorter students as well as external applicants.

Meanwhile, Shorter College president Harold Newman indicated that the institution will continue to grow its online education program in the coming years. In fact, the news source reports that the college has plans to launch an online bachelors degree in business administration, a masters degree in accounting and an associates degree in science in the fall of 2010.

Today, nearly 4 million students are taking online courses and earning online college degrees. At the secondary school level, more than 700,000 high school students are taking one or more courses online and nearly 40 states have established state-led virtual schools.
