Online university to add general studies degree
American Public University, an accredited online college, has recently announced the launch of a new bachelors degree program in general studies.
The purpose of the program is to create more flexibility in the curriculum and help students develop critical thinking skills across a wide range of academic disciplines.
Areas of study will include management and technology, society and the environment, as well as liberal and interpretative arts. Students graduating from the program may see employment opportunities in public policy, human resources and public relations fields.
"As we continue to expand our degree offerings for our diverse student population, the bachelors of arts in general studies provides students with flexible options," said university president Wallace Boston.
"Our affordable tuition and respected curriculum is a [great option] for students seeking to study an integrated and broad range of academic disciplines," he added.
Today, over 3.5 million students are taking online courses and earning online college degrees. At the secondary school level, over 700,000 high school students are taking one or more courses online and nearly 40 states have established state-led virtual schools.
