Online university rolls out new geographic information systems degree
Officials at American Sentinel University have recently announced that the school has added a new online bachelors degree in geographic information systems (GIS).
The GIS program is designed to teach students how to interpret spatial data in order to uncover patterns, trends and relationships. Although the program was developed to offer students entry into the geographic information systems field, it may provide opportunities in other business areas as well.
Students will learn how to design maps and interpret visual information, examine ethical issues regarding GIS in society as well as integrate remote sensing and GPS techniques into the GIS process.
"An online GIS degree can be the gateway for a successful career in a broad range of industries from military battlefield management to epidemiology research to farming to municipal emergency planning," said university president Mary Adams.
Universities that offer online degree programs may be particularly attractive to busy adults who would like to acquire new skills but do not have the time to do so in a traditional setting.
