Online university launches degree program for preschool teachers

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of preschool teachers is expected to grow 19 percent over the next eight years - a rate that is faster than the average for all other occupations. Due to continued emphasis on early childhood education, industry analysts are anticipating an increased demand for individuals who have been trained in this field.

To meet the needs of a growing teacher shortage, many online universities are expanding their elementary education programs. For example, Park University recently announced that it will offer an online bachelor of science, which is tailored for preschool teachers and directors.

The program is focused on early childhood education for infants, toddlers and preschool-age children.

Many schools are implementing more academically intensive elementary education programs due to the stricter standards for teachers that have been set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

"The coursework is not only practical, but also designed to challenge teachers to reflect on their work with young children, families and community," said Amy Wolf, chair of early childhood education and assistant professor of education at Park.

Online universities allow individuals who are currently employed earn degrees in a new field or switch careers.

Preschool teachers held 457,200 jobs during the 2008-2009 academic year, the BLS reports. On average, teachers in this field earned between $18,840 and $31,430 per year.
