Online university adds new certificate program

Officials with Drexel University Online, an online education institution, have announced that the school has added a special education certificate program to its School of Education.

The new certificate offering is designed to produce education professionals who are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle the needs of at-risk students and those with disabilities. It was developed for current certified teachers who are interested in attaining a special education certificate in the state of Pennsylvania.

"We're very proud to offer our students an outstanding curriculum within this convenient online format," said. Kenneth Hartman, academic director for Drexel University Online. "All of our online programs, including our Special Education Certification program, are taught by the same faculty as our on-campus courses."

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of special education teachers is expected to increase by 17 percent over the next 10 years, faster than average for all occupations.

Online universities may be particularly attractive to adults who would like to acquire new skills but do not have the time to do so in a conventional setting.
