Online education website helps send single mothers back to school
A new survey by eLearners.com, a web resource of EducationDynamics which connects prospective students with online degree programs, has found that two-thirds of Americans do not believe that single moms should be given financial aid, such as scholarships or tax breaks to help pay for school.
"We find it alarming that single moms are stigmatized by [so many] Americans," said Terrence Thomas, executive vice president of marketing for eLearners.com.
To help single mothers break free from the cycle of under-education and under-employment, eLearners created Project Working Mom 2010, which is a full-tuition scholarship program that helps send such individuals back to school.
"Through Project Working Mom, we've heard countless tales of heroic mothers working multiple jobs to support their families while going to school at night to provide a better life for their children," added Thomas.
After four rounds of contributions, the program has awarded approximately $6 million in full-tuition scholarships to more than 150 parents.
Online colleges may be particularly attractive to adults who would like to acquire new skills but do not have the time to do so in a conventional setting.
