Online college sees record enrollment
Officials with LCTCS Online, Louisiana Community and Technical College System's online education initiative, have recently announced that enrollment in the distance learning program has increased dramatically over the past year.
From the spring of 2009 to the spring of 2010, online enrollment increased by more than 43 percent to a total of 424 students. Officials with the program have credited the rise to a series of improvements that were made in the last year, including moving exclusively to eBooks, which saved students approximately 31 percent on the cost of course materials.
"We are pleased to be able to bring this sort of savings directly to our students," said Joe May, LCTCS president.
"Not only do our students have the convenience of using our online learning portal, but they also have extra money in their pockets, and that is extremely beneficial in this current economic climate," he added.
Online education has been hailed as a cheaper and more flexible instruction option that allows adult learners such as busy parents or working professionals to earn a degree without interrupting their lives.
