Ashworth College has announced the winners of a national program called Project Working Mom
and Dads, Too! which provides full tuition scholarships for non-traditional students.
Project Working Mom was originally launched in January 2008 by eLearners.com, an online education resource that connects prospective students with online learning providers. Due to its popularity, the program was followed by more similar campaigns and to date has disbursed more than $6 million in full-ride scholarships.
One of the winners, Madison English is a working mother from McDonough, Georgia, and she is expected to use the award to pursue a professional medical billing and claims program at Ashworth.
"I always wanted to go to college, but got off track at an early age," says English, adding that by the time she decided to go back to school she could not afford it.
Meanwhile, F. Milton Miller, Ashworth vice president of education, stresses that through online degree programs the schools strives to "help deserving, hard-working parents improve their lives."
Studies have shown that the salaries of those with college degrees consistently surpass the earnings of individuals without higher education.
For example, estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau for 2007 show the average earnings for those with high school education were $42,466, while bachelors degree holders earned $88,843, which is more than twice as much.
