According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 2008 marketing industry held about 623,800 jobs and median wages ranged between $80,220 and $105,580 per year. Due in part to the expansion of Internet advertising, careers in publicity are becoming increasingly popular.

As a result, many online universities are launching degree programs to meet the demands of individuals who want to work in marketing. For example, Florida Tech University Online recently announced that it will be offering a new MBA with a specialization in Internet marketing. This will be the first fully online program of its kind, and it is designed to prepare students for complex global markets.

"Now more than ever, we can't underestimate the role of higher education in career success and working adults' need for a convenient, flexible solution. Offering an MBA in Internet marketing, from a nationally ranked university is particularly exciting as knowledge of emerging technologies is increasingly critical to meeting business initiatives in today's interactive marketplace," said Adrian Marrullier, executive vice president of student services from University Alliance.

This program, and other online marketing degree curricula, offers coursework that focuses on social media, interactive communication and search engine processes.

According to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, starting salaries for marketing majors who graduated in 2009 averaged $43,325 per year.
