Free certification in gerontology offered by online university

As baby boomers reach retirement age, healthcare workers are preparing for a surge in the demand for elder care. Certifications in gerontology, such as the one offered by Pacific University's College of Health Professions, are intended to educate healthcare professionals on the proper care of older adults.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), many of the occupations that are projected to grow the fastest over the next decade are concentrated in the healthcare industry.
A certification in gerontology could benefit healthcare professionals in several different occupations, including registered nurses, social workers, physician assistants and physical therapists.
"Research in all areas of aging is exploding, and it is imperative that healthcare professionals keep up with it to provide optimal care to their patients," said Linda Hunt, an associate professor of occupational therapy at Pacific University.
Over the next eight years, the healthcare industry is expected to generate 3.2 million new jobs, which is more than any other industry, the BLS reports.
This is the university's first online-only curriculum and allows professionals the flexibility to continue working while they study. July 16 is the last day prospective applicants can apply to the program free of charge. Thereafter, applicants will be asked to pay a minimal fee.
