With millions of Americans worrying about their jobs, eLearners.com says education is the best way to achieve the competitive advantage that may help advance one's career.

The website connects prospective students with hundreds of programs at accredited universities across the nation that offer online degrees and certificate programs that can help launch more lucrative careers.

"Of the top 30 occupations that are projected to grow the fastest between 2004 and 2014, 23 require a college degree," says Terrence Thomas, EVP Marketing Operations for eLearners.com.

"Some [jobs] fare better than others during tough times, and having the right education and credentials can make the difference in ensuring a recession-proof career," he adds.

The source cites recent estimates from the U.S. Department of Labor which suggest the fastest-growing industries include healthcare, social services, government, as well as science and technology.

Meanwhile, studies have shown that salaries of those with college degrees consistently surpass the earnings of those without higher education, and the former are more likely to be employed during recessions.

The Census Bureau calculated the average earnings for men with high school education were $42,466 in 2007, while those with bachelors degrees earned $88,843, which is more than twice as much.
