Study: Earnings for interns with masters degrees expected to increase
While many students see internships as an opportunity to gain real-world experience while they are still in school, some of these positions may allow students to earn a good living as well.
According to a recent survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), masters degree holders who land paid internship positions will see improved earning potential in the coming year.
Research suggests that the average wage for these individuals grew from $23.18 to $24.29 per hour this year, showing a 5 percent increase.
However, average earnings for interns with bachelors degrees dropped slightly from $17.13 to $17 per hour, according to the study.
Marilyn Mackes, executive director of NACE, said that these findings suggest "there is more competition for interns [with masters degrees] this year," which could inspire students to accelerate their education by enrolling in an online masters degree program.
Furthermore, the researchers found that some industries tend to pay their interns more. Actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, engineering and computer science were the sectors that offered the highest paying internships, according to the survey.
