Students who are interested in becoming medical scientists may find there are many fields within which they can establish a career. These industries could include healthcare, pharmaceuticals or medical research, according to Payscale.com. These professionals might consider obtaining a master's degree in this field, as it could lead to more job opportunities.

Some schools are increasing their master's programs in an effort to offer students this option. For example, Tufts University has announced it will begin a program in conservation medicine next fall, according to Newswise.

Individuals who enroll in this program will learn how health research is carried out and executed. By participating in classrooms, laboratory and field work, they will study climate change, new diseases in wild animals and how endangered species can affect human activity. The curriculum is intended for students to develop communication, research and leadership skills that could help them launch a career in conservation medicine, the news source reports.

Individuals who wish to become medical scientists may find that similar master's degree programs could also benefit their salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these professionals have the potential to make more than $117,000 per year.
