Online masters program designed for national security professionals

Recent threats to the country’s security have inspired many individuals to switch careers in order to preserve the nation’s safety. In an effort to help these individuals gain the training they will need to succeed in their new positions, some campus-based and online schools are increasing their offerings.

For example, Kaplan University recently created an online masters program for individuals who wish to work in homeland security and emergency management. Individuals who complete this or similar programs may be prepared to take on managerial positions in emergency preparedness and response, homeland defense, emergency management, hazard mitigation or border and transportation security.

Kaplan’s course of study is designed for bachelors degree holders who are looking to launch homeland security careers in local, state or federal agencies. Job prospects for these professionals - particularly those who choose to work for the national government - are expected to increase in the coming years.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 171,000 homeland security workers who were working in 2008 were employed by the federal government. These individuals were repsonsible for reducing the country’s susceptibility to terrorism as well as minimizing damage from potential attacks and natural disasters.
