Online masters program caters to career-switchers

Over the next four years, nearly 500,000 teaching positions are expected to become available in schools across the country, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As a result, many individuals are returning to campus-based and online schools to gain the certifications they need to enter this fast-growing field.

In an effort to cater to these degree seekers, some colleges are integrating work experience into their curricula. For example, Montana State University’s Northern Plains Transition to Teaching program grants enrollees a temporary teaching license after one year of study. As a result, these individuals are able to gain in-classroom experience while they are still earning a degree.

Students who complete the program will be recommended to receive a full license after two years of study, which will include one year of work in a secondary school. Degree seekers can complete the rest of the curriculum through online courses, which make the program accessible to students in any part of the country.

Applicants are expected to have a four-year degree in another field and some work experience, according to school officials.
