Online education aims to meet the demands of the healthcare industry

A master's degree in nursing (MSN) could be an important qualification for registered nurses (RNs) who are looking for advancement. For those who are already working and would like to obtain a higher degree, some schools are increasing their online course offerings.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there are careers in this field where RNs must have an MSN to be considered for employment. Individuals who would like to obtain an MSN but find it difficult to do so due to work may find that online education fits into a busy schedule.
American Sentinel University is one school that provides online courses for RNs to complete an MSN. Catherine Garner, the school's provost and dean of health sciences and nursing, says "if a nurse wants to remain competitive - to encourage job retention and promotion - then he or she needs an advanced degree."
The BLS reports RNs hold 2.6 million jobs, and by 2018 that number will increase by 22 percent. For individuals looking to further their career with an MSN, online courses may be a good option to obtain this degree.
