New certificate program offers financial planners graduate-level credit

For many working adults, several factors go into the decision to pursue higher education at a campus-based or online college. Some degree seekers may worry their family life and professional development will suffer if they choose to enroll in a full-time masters program.

Fortunately, many brick-and-mortar and online schools are creating convenient educational options that are designed with working students in mind.

For instance, the College for Financial Planning recently launched an Accredited Portfolio Management Advisor certification program, which is intended for professionals who currently work in the financial sector.

The two-part program, which was created under the guidance of representatives from Ameriprise Financial, combines online courses and self-study that cover topics such as investment management theory, security valuation as well as portfolio design and management.

In addition to the certificate, individuals who complete this course of study will receive three hours of graduate degree credit, which they may choose to apply to one of the school's masters programs.

Similar educational opportunities could lead professionals into lucrative careers, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that financial managers working in May 2008 earned an average of $99,330 per year.
