To make civilian careers more accessible to current and former members of the military, some schools are offering financial assistance to soldiers who choose to enroll in campus-based or online degree programs.

For example, Mississippi State University recently announced it will offer discounted tuition to servicemen and women who choose to pursue an MBA through its distance degree program.

Soldiers who enroll in the program, which was originally created for members of the Mississippi National Guard, will pay a discounted rate of $353.50 for each credit hour instead of the normal rate of $502.50 for other students.

To be eligible for this price, degree seekers must be active-duty members of the military or National Guard and have a legal residence within the state. Members of the reserves, U.S. veterans and Mississippi State alumni who have served can also apply for the program.

Similar distance learning and online degree programs could help current soldiers pursue higher education while they carry out their service to the country. As a result, they may be more likely to ease the transition into civilian life once they are discharged.
