MBA student invents online program for advertisers
Online courses may help budding entrepreneurs develop the skills they need to start their own businesses, such as the company started by a MBA student at Kingston University in London.
Spyros Pyrgiotis, a 24 year-old business student, invented The Text Page, a text-only website that allows advertisers to pay per character to post their content.
The website is one page of color-coded text advertisements, such company names, slogans or phrases, that link viewers to the marketer's sites. To ensure all advertisers get the same level of online exposure, the text reloads each time the page is refreshed.
Marketers can also use the site for search engine optimization purposes, as the text creates keywords that can be picked up by search engines.
Clients can purchase text on the site for three years for $2 per character. Pyrgiotis has already sold more than 12,000 characters since the website went live a few months ago and paid off his tuition bills.
Pyrgiotis, whose background is in sound engineering, said he invented the site to "[create] something unique" for the advertising sector while considering how "our minds are adapting to the new media" that is emerging.
Online universities may provide students the freedom to pursue their entrepreneurial endeavors while they work toward a degree.
