Master's programs provide advanced training for massage therapists

Individuals who wish to become massage therapists may discover that some schools are increasing their offerings by adding master's programs for this profession.

For instance, the Soma Institute-National School of Clinical Massage recently announced that this will be an option for students beginning next year.

The curriculum will allow degree seekers to learn how to use advanced techniques and apply them to special clients, such as those who who have pre-existing health challenges. Courses in this program will also focus on the treatment for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions as well as the Eastern philosophy of health.

The overall goal of the program is inspiring students to encourage their future clients to take responsibility and prevent potential health problems.

Ellen Letten, the program's director, said that this degree offers multiple specialties and aims to "help the student determine what their practice will look like and how to get there."

Similar programs could help students prepare to become massage therapists, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that these professionals can specialize in more than 80 different kinds of massage. Employment for individuals in this industry will increase by 19 percent over the next decade.
