Many engineering students choose to enroll in a specialized campus-based or online degree program based on the career prospects for their field of choice. However, some high-paying positions may require applicants to have experience in more than one sector of the industry.

For example, robotics engineering mandates that workers have a working knowledge of the mechanical, electrical and software aspects of the profession. Because this area of the field is growing quickly, some campus-based and online schools are beginning to diversify their offerings.

Carnegie Mellon University is one of these colleges, as the institution recently announced the launch of a master's program in robotic systems development.

The Pittsburgh Business Journal reports that the program is intended to serve individuals who have earned a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, physical science or applied mathematics. Applicants should also have between one and three years of work or research experience.

Graduates of similar robotics engineering programs are likely to increase their earning potential, as the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that these individuals typically make more than $80,000 per year.
