Masters program helps working students launch careers in social work

In an attempt to help budding social workers boost their careers without stunting their professional development, many campus-based and online colleges are creating masters programs that cater to working students.

For example, the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown recently granted degrees to the inaugural class of its masters of social work program, the Frederick Post-News reports.

In addition to a graduate-level curriculum, students in the program's pilot cohort were required to complete a practicum, which gave them hands-on experience in the field. Degree seekers were able to work in a variety of environments, ranging from hospitals to schools.

Although this course of study was designed for professionals who wished to hold onto their current jobs while they pursued a degree, some students say the practical experience added a great deal to their workload. However, this element may help these professionals succeed in a new career, such as teaching behaviorally challenged youths.

In fact, government analysts recommend that social workers who wish to work in schools, clinics or hospitals complete similar programs, as a masters degree is often a requirement for these positions.
