Grad schools expand doctoral programs in education
The educational services industry is the country's second largest and accounts for approximately 13.5 million jobs in the U.S., according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Professionals who are already working in this field may benefit from a graduate program that provides specialized training so that they can have a broader set of skills when they choose to enter the workplace.
The Harvard Graduate School of Education recently honored 25 students who were accepted into the school's first doctoral program, the Harvard Crimson reports.
The curriculum is broken up into different topics over a three-year period. The first year of study focuses on leadership roles within educational policy, group relations and family and community engagement, according to the news source. The second will consist of a number of electives from which students can choose. Lastly, individuals who are enrolled in this program will participate in a paid residency with organizations that have partnered with Harvard.
According to the newspaper, this program is intended to allow students to acquire the critical leadership skills they need as well as an understanding for learning and teaching.
Professionals in the education industry may find similar graduate programs could lead to advancement if they wish to teach on the post-secondary level, as these individuals typically have this degree, according to the BLS.
