The offerings of partially online universities, such as the University of California, Irivine Extension, may help students and professionals stay abreast of emerging trends in technology.

Beginning in January, the school will launch a course that will help participants better understand the technology behind the iPhone and the iPod Touch.

The course, called Mobile Development for Apple iPhone and iTouch, will give students an introduction to mobile programming as well as a comparison of the ways it is used by Apple, BlackBerry and Windows.

Curriculum will also discuss XCode development and phone-specific features, such as accelerometer, touch screen, GEO positioning, sound and web access.

Students enrolled in the course will receive "hands-on experience in the development environment," as they will have the opportunity to "create what could be the next big Apple app[lication]," said Dave Dimas, director of the school's engineering, sciences and information technology programs.

Students who wish to launch or accelerate careers in information technology may consider enrolling in similar online courses that can keep them updated on the latest developments in the sector.
