Students and working adults who wish to boost their career prospects may want to consider online degree programs that can allow them to apply their skills firsthand.

IBM recently gave students this opportunity through its international case competition, which challenged undergraduate and graduate students to work in teams to develop a business plan.

A total of eight teams of MBA candidates were given the opportunity to develop marketing plans for the company's Smarter Cities program, which is intended to revitalize developing markets such as Dubai, Singapore, Shanghai, Prague, Rio De Janeiro and Mumbai. A $50,000 cash prize was awarded to the winning team.

Undergraduate students were able to compete for $28,000 in prizes by preparing cases that related to IBM's Smarter Planet initiative. Students were divided into six teams and asked to submit market conditions, dynamics and environmental conditions analysis that could supplement the program's success.

Company officials said the program is intended to help IBM "revitalize cities so they can become smarter and more efficient."

Students at online colleges may want to consider participating in similar events that could enhance their knowledge of the international business sector.
