As more companies expand overseas, many campus-based and online colleges are increasing their offerings in the international business field to better prepare their students for the modern workforce.

For example, the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland has announced it will support a series of international programs through its Center for International Business and Education Research (CIBER).

The center - which offers initiatives such as courses abroad, internships and language training to business degree candidates - has received a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to continue operations for the next four years. In addition to its traditional programs, the center will also support faculty research initiatives that could enhance the classroom experience.

CIBER's new government-supported programs will focus on trends that are growing more popular across the international business scene, such as government policy, emerging markets, global entrepreneurship and sustainability.

"Emerging markets such as Brazil, China and India have become even more important than before, and every company now needs to face up to this," said Kislaya Prasad, the center's director.

"With mounting evidence of climate change, U.S. companies now need to find sustainable business models that do not sacrifice international competitiveness," Prasad added.
