The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (UW-L) is on its way to becoming the only school in the nation to offer an online masters degree in medical dosimetry, according to the Lacrosse Tribune.

The degree program, which is designed to train students in the field of radiation oncology, is expected to be approved by the UW System Board of Regents in the coming days.

The 20-month masters degree program will allow current medical professionals to gain more experience in the field while becoming board certified in medical dosimetry.

The coursework will focus primarily on physics, radiobiology, cross-sectional anatomy as well as radiation safety and complex 3-D planning.

Student Matthias Cook, who is currently enrolled in the certificate program in the same field, said that medical dosimetry "really stretches your mind" and requires one to "think outside the box," quoted by the news source.

UW-L's program director Nishele Lenards said that demand for medical dosimetrists will continue to rise as the population ages and the incidence of cancer increases.

Online education is a cost-effective and flexible option for those who would like to earn their degree but find it difficult to attend classes on campus because of distance, family or work commitments.
