University launches bachelor's degree-to-RN program

In order to prepare more people to become nurses, in anticipation of future healthcare worker shortages, many universities are expanding their degree offerings in this field. This may benefit those who wish to become nurses due to the projected increase in job prospects.

Schools such as the university of Southern Nevada (USN) are launching unique alternatives to traditional registered nurse (RN) programs. The school has joined with St. Rose Dominican Hospitals (St. Rose) to offer an RN certification program for bachelor's degree holders. This opportunity may be of interest to those who wish to switch careers.

The accelerated bachelor's degree in nursing combines online courses and on-site labs taught by USN faculty who are currently employed by St. Rose.

"Nevada's nursing shortage has decreased somewhat during the economic downturn," said Mable Smith, dean and professor at the USN College of Nursing. "As the economy improves, we will see the nursing shortage become critical."

According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, nearly 5,500 new nurses will be needed statewide by within the next six years. These projections are very promising, as many other occupations are expecting little or no growth.
