University joins local colleges to launch online RN-to-BSN program

As the healthcare industry continues to expand, registered nurses (RNs) could have increased job opportunities. In order to advance in their careers, many RNs choose to return to college and earn a bachelor's of nursing (BSN) degree.

In an effort to accommodate the growing number of RNs who are seeking higher education, many schools are expanding their RN-to-BSN programs. In Indiana, RNs can earn a BSN in as few as 12 months due to a new partnership between eight Indiana University School of Nursing campuses, Pal-Item.com reports. The consortium consists of Schools of Nursing on the Bloomington, Columbus, East, IUPUI, Kokomo, Northwest, South Bend and Southeast campuses. Students can apply to the campus that is closest to them and then take courses completely online.

"Patient care outcomes are directly linked to the education of the nursing workforce. As nurse employers look to increase the numbers of bachelor prepared nurses, this statewide program is well situated to address this growing demand," said Donna Boland, president of Indiana Nursing Workforce Development Coalition.

The program consists of eight-week modules that acknowledge the nurse's clinical experience and electives that enhance skills in targeted areas.

Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries in the U.S. and employment of professionals in this field is expected to increase dramatically over the next eight years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.
