In an effort to help those who are applying for college, U.S. News & World Report has put together a guide to in-demand jobs in the next several years.
While business and technology jobs have definitely remained relevant, the source says, there is a new trend on the horizon and it points in the direction of three fields likely to grow faster than others, namely healthcare, education and clean energy.
"The millions of jobs that were lost during the recent economic crisis have made many Americans realize that they don't just need an education - they need the right education," it explains.
Demand for healthcare professionals will stem from a combination of aging population and breakthrough medical discoveries. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for nurses is expected to grow by a dynamic 23 percent over the next seven years, and the top salaries in the field approach $100,000 a year.
Education has also received much attention, with President Obama urging Americans to go back to school to acquire marketable skills. Those who would like to prepare for success in a teaching profession may apply for degree programs in education, keeping in mind that demand for teachers will grow by 12 percent until at least 2016.
Finally, with the political and cultural changes in our approach to climate and energy consumption, those with marketable green skills, such as environmental engineers, can expect bright employment and salary prospects.
