When Elias Perez of Jackson, Michigan, was laid off from his job at an engineering and manufacturing company, he knew it would mean lost wages. Instead of scrambling to find a job, though, Perez studied to get a degree in Nursing.

The decision paid off for the 54-year-old, as he now works as a nurse with Allegiance Health. He did end up losing wages during the time he studied as he had suspected he would, but he says he feels his new career is worth the sacrifice.

Perez was able to afford his education partially due to a federal Trade Adjustment Allowance that helped pay for some of his school costs and living expenses. Having little time before his financial situation prevented him from continuing his studies, he was able to graduate in under two years.

"It was a fast-paced course that required full-time study, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., five days a week," Perez said, quoted by the Jackson City Patriot. "On weekends, I spent nine to 10 hours studying."

Perez story proves that even in a difficult economy, those with drive and dedication can change careers. Those who would like to do the same should speak to counselors at their nursing school of choice.
