College offers online associates degree in medical coding
Employment of professionals who work with medical records and codes is projected to increase by 20 percent over the next eight years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). These individuals usually have a strong understanding of technology and computer software.
Due to an increased demand for workers in this field, many American colleges and universities are creating or expanding programs that can help adults earn the degrees necessary to enter this industry. For example, Midway College recently launched an online associates degree in medical coding.
Students who are enrolled in this program may be prepared for the required medical certification exam from the American Academy of Professional Coders or the American Health Information Management Association.
"Midway College has a long history of training students in the healthcare field. With the ongoing growth in the healthcare industry and the growing need specifically for medical coders, this is a natural program for our College to offer," said William B. Drake, president of Midway College.
The online format of this degree program allows students to pursue their education without disruption to their current careers or personal lives.
Graduates of this and similar programs may have the foundation necessary for additional study in healthcare support.
The BLS reports that the median annual income for professionals in this field was $30,610 during the 2008-2009 fiscal year.
