Due to the recession, many Americans feel as though they cannot afford higher education. However, a growing number of universities, government groups and private organizations are increasing their financial aid initiatives, in an effort to provide access to education for more students.

For example, the Women's Self Worth Foundation recently announced that it will donate $250,000 to the American Indian College Fund. The grant will be used to create 14 scholarships to benefit Native American women who are attending college.

"Through this generosity, we will be able to help in the development of the next generation of women leaders and scholars in Indian Country," said Richard B. Williams, president and CEO of the American Indian College Fund.

The goal of the grant is to the ensure that Native American Indian women are not inhibited by the costs of higher education. The money will fund seven scholarships in the amount of $4,000 for those who are pursuing associate's degrees. The grant will also provide four scholarships in the amount of $6,000 for Native female students who are earning a bachelor's degree, as well as an additional three $8,000 financial aid packages.
